Play Therapy for young children is a highly specialized way of helping children express themselves when they are too young for traditional "talk" therapy. This kind of therapy uses play as the young child's natural means of self-expression and the toys act as their words. The key componant to Play Therapy is not only the use of specifically chosen toys but the complete and total unconditional positive regard the therapist holds for the child, and the belief that children, given the safety, security, and opportunity, naturally seek optimum emotional, mental, and physicial balance in the world. Kristin Byrd is a Registered Play Therapist with the American Play Therapy Association.
